Who should use Glycolic Acid?

Glycolic acid is best suited to normal, combination, and oily skin types. People with dry skin can use it, but should start cautiously and ensure their moisturiser is robust, since exfoliating an already dry skin barrier can tip into irritation quickly. If you have sensitive skin, rosacea, eczema, or any active skin inflammation, glycolic acid requires careful introduction — begin with a low concentration (around 5%) and do a patch test for several days before applying it to your full face. Darker skin tones should also be aware that using too high a concentration, or overusing it, can paradoxically worsen hyperpigmentation through something called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Start low, go slow.

How to use it

For at-home use, look for glycolic acid concentrations between 5% and 10% in leave-on formulas like toners, serums, or pads — this range is effective without being unnecessarily harsh. Concentrations above 20% are typically reserved for professional peels and are not appropriate for unsupervised daily use. Always apply glycolic acid at night, not in the morning. This matters for two reasons: first, it increases your skin's sensitivity to UV light, raising your sunburn risk if you apply it before sun exposure; second, skin cell renewal naturally peaks at night, so you're working with your biology rather than against it. Apply it to clean, dry skin after cleansing, and let it absorb for a few minutes before layering other products. Start with two to three evenings per week, and only move to daily use if your skin tolerates it well. Give it at least six to eight weeks of consistent use before evaluating results — skin turnover is a slow process.

What to pair it with (and what to avoid)

Glycolic acid plays well with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides — in fact, pairing it with a ceramide-rich moisturiser is a smart move because it helps restore the skin barrier that exfoliation can temporarily disrupt. Niacinamide is another good partner; it helps regulate oil and calm any mild redness that glycolic acid can sometimes cause. On the other hand, there are a few combinations to treat with care. Avoid using glycolic acid in the same step, or even the same evening, as retinol — both are potent actives that accelerate skin cell turnover, and layering them increases the risk of significant irritation without meaningfully improving results. The same caution applies to BHAs like salicylic acid: using two different exfoliating acids together is a fast route to a compromised skin barrier. Vitamin C — particularly in its more unstable, low-pH forms — can also clash when used simultaneously, as the competing pH requirements reduce the effectiveness of both. A simple rule: alternate your actives across different evenings rather than stacking them all at once.
